M-C-M' is Marx's formula for how capitalism creates profit (money - commodities - more money). The track is an illustration of this formula and how it for the worker who creates the value translates into a life of toil and little time for anything else. It is also inspired by Herbert Marcuse's idea of the one-dimensional man, a product of the circle of labour and consumption who is never allowed to develop a mind of his own or to want anything else than what the market provides.

I work the machine
Everyday I come to this place
And everyday I strain myself
put on my face and my bodily armour
To shield me from the what-nots and what-ifs I will encounter
There is a me there somewhere
Underneath
A me which is hiding in the undergrowth
Under branches and twigs

We spin in a circle of labour, consumption, reproduction

That shielded little fellow doesn’t want to but he has to listen too

Money grows, value is created
Out of thin air and muscles
Reproductive time has no value but to restore
To build capacity for another spin on the wheel
We take another one
You know, yesterday we had a new brand of cereal in the store
They say it’s good for you
Makes you cope just a little bit more
It’s supposed to be real tasty with yoghurt
I heard they make it here, in our town
Might even be someone I know

The money carousel keeps spinning
Let’s take a ride
Our heads feel all dizzy
But we’re glad not standing aside

Poor people who aren’t allowed the ride
There’s not seats for everyone
The sky is the limit
We take flight and aim
I hear they serve those cereals as inflight snacks now
The system cannot end
It’s a master of adaptation
For every crisis
The dollars respawn, stronger than before
We produce
We consume
On and on and on and on
A bit less human for every spin
